New Delhi, 12th July 2022: Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair gets relief from Supreme Court. The court has extended his interim bail till further orders and now Zubair’s petition will now be heard on September 7. The court has given the Uttar Pradesh government four weeks to respond to Zubair’s plea.
Zubair has got this relief only in Sitapur case. The rest of the proceedings against him are in the lower courts, so it will not make any difference in the case of Lakhimpur and Delhi. It is known that on June 27, Mohammad Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police for hurting religious sentiments.
Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice A.S. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the UP government, appeared before Bopanna’s bench. They said that they want to file an affidavit against the petition filed by Mohammad Zubair for quashing the FIR lodged in Sitapur.
Zubair was granted interim bail for five days. Following this, the bench listed journalist Zubair’s plea for final hearing on September 7 and asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file its reply within four weeks. A vacation bench of the apex court had granted interim bail to Zubair for five days in the case on July 8.
On July 7, the judicial magistrate court of Sitapur sent Zubair to the custody of the UP Police till July 14. Delhi Police had brought Sitapur in connection with the FIR lodged against Zubair at Khairabad police station for hurting religious sentiments through tweets.
Earlier on July 4, the Delhi Police produced Mohammad Zubair in the court of the Judicial Magistrate, Sitapur, from where he was sent to judicial custody for 14 days. The Delhi Police later took Zubair back to Delhi.
