New Delhi, 14th November 2022: The Indian Government earlier this year blocked the VLC Media Player website under the pretext that the programme was exchanging user data with a “hostile country” and communicating with the server of another app that had been previously outlawed. It now appears that the restriction on the VLC Media Player website has been lifted.
Many users in India were unable to download the programme or even access the website at all. However, the VLC app kept functioning properly.
According to reports, the Home Ministry issued the notification of the prohibition in accordance with Section 69(A) of the Information Technology Act.
However, according to reports, it was prohibited without warning, in violation of the 2009 Blocking Rules in Shreya Singhal v. Union of India.
The Department of Telecom received a request for information (RTI) from the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) in June inquiring as to why the website had been restricted.
The ban has been lifted, according to the official Twitter account for VLC Media Player. Most Indian users may now access the website.
