New Delhi, 17th April 2021: Amid a huge number of people testing positive from the Kumbh Mela area in Haridwar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday morning urged that the weeks-long religious festival “should now only be symbolic” amid an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases.

“Spoke to Acharya Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji on the phone today. Enquired about the health of all saints. All the saints are providing support to the administration for smooth conduct of the affair and I thanked them for it,” PM Modi tweeted in Hindi.

Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Awadheshanand Giri of Juna Akhara said that “we respect the appeal of the Prime Minister. I request people to not come to the bath and follow all the rules.”

At the same time, Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat tweeted in support of Prime Minister Modi’s tweet. He sought support from the saints in the ongoing battle against Corona. He said that the government is committed to safeguarding the common man and society.

Many seers have tested positive after the commencement of Kumbh Mela, including Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad president Mahant Narendra Giri, who is admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Rishikesh.

All the saints are corporative and are supporting the administration to fight the crisis.
