Britain, 20th October 2022: British Prime Minister Liz Truss tendered her resignation within six weeks of her swearing-in. Truss is the shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history. Earlier in 1827, George Canning was the Prime Minister for 119 days. He died in the middle of his tenure. Truss announced her resignation in a Downing Street statement. She became the Prime Minister by defeating Indian-origin Rishi Sunak. According to reports, the election of the new Prime Minister may be held by next week. Till then, Truss will remain in the post.

There was opposition to Truss within his party. A day earlier, Interior Minister Suella Braverman resigned from the cabinet. Truss also said that she has not been able to fulfil her promises and has lost the confidence of the party. The demand for making Rishi Sunak the Prime Minister has started rising in the Conservative Party. British lawmakers allege that supporters of Truss conspired to vote against gas drilling in parliament. There was anger against Truss among Conservative MPs. In such a situation, only by voting of MPs, Rishi Sunak can be given the post of Prime Minister.

It was only after the presentation of the economic plan that turmoil began and a political crisis erupted. After this Liz Truss changed the finance minister and then overturned many of his policies. Liz Truss had promised that she would bring the economy back on track and control inflation. However, when Truss made the new Finance Minister, she overturned all the decisions of the old Finance Minister. After this, a rebellion started in the party itself. Party MPs got angry with this leadership.

The decisions taken by the Finance Minister were having a bad effect on the market. There was increasing instability. The pound was starting to weaken. Criticism of the UK economy had begun outside the country as well. However, on the issue of tax cuts, Truss gained confidence and became the Prime Minister. But after becoming PM, it became heavy on her.

In the initial phases of the election, Indian-origin Sunak was ahead. However, he had to face defeat later. Now, there is a possibility that Rishi Sunak will become the Prime Minister of Britain. Many Tory members are willing to support Sunak. According to a survey, 32 percent of Tory members want Boris Johnson to be Prime Minister, and 23 percent support Sunak. Tory members were regretting the decision to elect Truss as PM.
