New Delhi, February 20, 2021: What is the situation of women’s security in the country’s capital? It can be gauged from the fact that a woman is raped every five hours in Delhi. Figures reveal that the total number of crimes against women decreased in 2020 compared to the previous year.

Despite this, 1,699 rapes, 2,186 molestations, and 65 sexual harassment cases against children were registered in the national capital. In 2019, 2,168 rapes, 2,921 molestation, and 109 cases were reported under the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012).

Delhi Police on Friday said that this is the first time in many years that all types of crimes against women have come down. Certainly, in 2020, due to the covid-19 lockdown in March, people’s movement was reduced for at least four months, which could also be another reason for the decrease in this number. However, the total number of major crimes and the daily average level reveals the condition of Delhi.

The city reports a case of rape every five hours, a murder every 19 hours, and a car theft every 15 minutes – although this is better than the average 2019. One case of snatching occurred almost every hour in 2020, compared to seventeen a day in 2019. Experts said crime against women has declined overall, but 2020 figures show that threat for women in Delhi is still there.
