Chennai, 14th February 2023: A postgraduate engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras), was found dead in his hostel room.
The deceased student was a resident of Maharashtra. The police informed about this on Tuesday. The student was studying M SElectrical Engineering and was found hanging in his hostel room on the IIT(M) campus.
The incident came to light when another student noticed his absence and informed the hostel warden. Police said that the door of the room where the deceased was staying was opened, where the deceased student was found hanging. A senior police officer said the student was under a lot of stress due to family problems.
Kotturpuram police have registered a case and are investigating. In another incident, a student hailing from Karnataka ended his life by consuming some pills, after which he was taken to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment. There was no immediate response from IIT Madras on both incidents.
On 13th February, an 18-year-old student studying at IIT Bombay died by suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of the institute’s hostel in Powai. No suicide note was recovered from the deceased. However, other students allege that the student took his life due to caste discrimination. The police are treating the matter as an accident.
