New Delhi, 15th June 2021: Amid the second wave of Covid-19, there has been an increase in the atrocities on elderly people. Around 73 per cent of the elderly faced abuse during the lockdown imposed.

The Edgewell Foundation has prepared a report based on the feedback of 5000 elders which has been released ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

It said that 82 per cent of the respondents claimed that their lives have been affected due to the current COVID-19 situation.

The report found that 73 per cent of elders reportedly said that the cases of abuse against them increased during and after the lockdown and 61 per cent of them claimed that mutuality was responsible for the rapidly increasing incidents of abuse of elders in families. Relationships were the main factor.

During the survey, it was found that 65 per cent of the respondents are facing neglect in their life while about 58 per cent said that they are facing abuse in their families and society.

The report also found that nearly every third of the elderly (35.1 per cent) claimed that people faced domestic violence (physical or verbal) in old age. The foundation’s president Himanshu Rath said that while the COVID-19 and related lockdowns and restrictions have affected almost everyone, the elderly have so far been the most affected.
