Mizoram, 16th June 2021: After the military coup in Myanmar in February this year, 9,247 people, including the Chief Minister of Chin province, Salai Lian Luai, have taken refuge in Mizoram.

The Chief Minister of Chin province crossed the international border on Monday night, a senior police officer said. He said 24 elected representatives of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party National League for Democracy, including Luai, have taken shelter in different parts of Mizoram.

Chin, a province of western Myanmar is adjacent to the western border of Mizoram. The official said that these citizens of Myanmar have been given shelter by the local people and many civic organizations and student organizations are also making arrangements for their accommodation and food.

Those who have taken refuge in the state are from the Chin community. They have an ancestral relationship with the Mizo community of Mizoram.

According to the figures of the Crime Investigation Branch of the Mizoram Police, at least 9,247 people from Myanmar are staying in ten districts of the state and the maximum of 4156 of them are in Champhai.

Meanwhile, Assam Rifles sources said that on several occasions, Myanmar nationals are trying to cross the international order according to sources, many of them are sent back and many enter through other routes.
