New Delhi, 1st March 2023: According to internet advocacy monitor Access Now, India, has topped the list for a fifth straight year, for the largest number of internet shutdowns worldwide in 2022.
In a research published on Tuesday (February 28), by the New York-based digital rights advocacy group Access Now, 84 of the 187 internet shutdowns documented by the group worldwide—including 49 in Jammu and Kashmir—took place in India.
According to the report, authorities cut off internet connectivity in Kashmir at least 49 times because of political unrest and violence, including a series of 16 consecutive orders for three-day shutdowns in January and February 2022.
