New Delhi, 28th March 2021: The Foundation Stone for Extension of Terminal Building at Gorakhpur Airport in Uttar Pradesh was laid by Shri Yogi Adityanath, Hon`ble Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh in the presence of Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State for Civil Aviation (I/C) on 28th March 2021. Dignitaries also flagged off an Alliance Air flight from Gorakhpur to Lucknow under RCS-UDAN on this occasion.
The ceremony took place in the august presence of Shri Nand Gopal Gupta, Minister of Civil Aviation, Uttar Pradesh; Shri Ravindra Shyamnarayan Shukla ‘Ravi Kishan’ MP (Lok Sabha); Shri Shiv Pratap Khukla, MP (Rajya Sabha); Shri Jai Prakash Nishad, MP (Rajya Sabha) and Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agrawal, MLA Gorakhpur Urban (U.P.) Shri Anuj Agrawal, Chairman, AAI, and other senior officials of AAI were also present on this occasion.
The existing terminal building commissioned in the year 2018 was designed to cater 100 passengers and has an area of 1890 sqm. The passenger traffic at the Gorakhpur airport has grown exponentially in very short span of time. Thus, to increase the passenger handling capacity of the airport and make the airport suitable for Airbus 320 type of Aircraft, AAI has planned the extension of the existing terminal building at a cost of Rs.26.87 Crores.
Spread in an area of 3440 sqm, the extended terminal will be equipped with 10 check -in- counters and two conveyor belts in arrival hall. An additional security hold area will also be created at first floor, after which the terminal building will be able to handle the 200 passengers during peak hours. The new expanded building will have escalators, lifts and enough space for a restaurant and commercial activities.
Gorakhpur is a city located along the banks of Rapti river in the eastern part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located near the Nepal border, 273 kilometres east of the state capital Lucknow. Gorakhpur Airport belongs to IAF and AAI maintains a Civil Enclave. Presently Indigo, Alliance Air and Spicejet are operating scheduled flights from the airport to Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi & Hyderabad.
