New Delhi, 17th January 2022: The Election Commission has announced the new date for the elections of Punjab Legislative Assembly. Now elections in Punjab will be held on February 20

The appeal to postpone the assembly elections in Punjab was made by several political parties of the state, including the ruling Congress Party and the state’s CM Charanjit Singh Channi, BJP and Punjab Lok Congress. Now this has also been approved by the Election Commission.

All these parties had appealed to the Election Commission that in view of Ravidas Jayanti the elections for the state assembly should be extended beyond February 14 The eyes of all the political parties of Punjab were fixed on the decision of the Election Commission today.

It is worth mentioning that the BJP and Punjab Lok Congress had written a letter to the Election Commission in this regard and appealed. State CM Charanjit Singh Channi has appealed that the date of election should be pushed forward by at least six days.

Appealing to the Commission on behalf of the party, it has been said that the absence of lakhs of people at the time of elections will not be right. People who move to Varanasi on Guru Ravidas Jayanti will not be able to be a part of the elections. Therefore, the date of this election must be extended.

A similar appeal has also been made by Punjab Lok Congress, the party of former CM Captain Amarinder Singh. Party General Secretary Kamal Saini in a letter to the Election Commission has said that thousands of people from Punjab visit Varanasi on the occasion of Guru Ravidas Jayanti. It said that the date of polling in the state has been kept on February 14. Thousands of people going to Varanasi will not be able to attend because of this. They would not want to miss this opportunity. Therefore, this date should be extended.
