New Delhi, 12th June 2021: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Saturday allied in the next year’s assembly elections in Punjab. Akali Dal President, Sukhbir Singh Badal called it the new dawn in Punjab politics, while BSP supremo Mayawati called it a historic step.

Mayawati acknowledged this alliance through three tweets on Twitter. She said, “The alliance announced by SAD and BSP in Punjab today is a new political and social initiative, which will certainly usher in the much-awaited new era of development, progress, and prosperity of the people in the state. Hearty congratulations and best wishes to the people for this historic step”

The BSP supremo in the next tweet, said, “Though every section of the society in Punjab is suffering from poverty, corruption, and unemployment. To get rid of this, it is very important to make this alliance successful.”

In the last tweet, Mayawati wrote, “There is a strong appeal to all the people of Punjab to give their full support to this historic alliance between Akali Dal and BSP in early 2022. In the upcoming assembly general elections, get involved in forming a coalition government with all your heart.”

SAD and BSP will fight the 2022 assembly elections and other elections together. The BSP will contest 20 of the 117 assembly seats in Punjab, with the rest of the seats going to the SAD.

Earlier, the Akali Dal had an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but the Badal-led party left the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over three agriculture laws passed by the Center last year. The BJP used to contest 23 seats in alliance with the Akalis.
