New Delhi, 13th May 2021: The outbreak of coronavirus has impacted the automobile industry. According to the latest report of the organization of the auto industry, the wholesale sales of passenger vehicles in the country have fallen by 10 percent.

The Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers (SIAM), a vehicle industry body, said on Wednesday that the demand has been impacted due to the imposition of lockdown by various states in April this year, the sales of passenger vehicles in India in April, 2021 as compared to March, have fallen by 10 percent. In April 2021, 2, 61,633 units were sold in India. Whereas in March 2021, 2, 90,939 units were sold in the country.

In the last week of March last year, a lockdown was imposed across the country to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. Due to this, there was no sale of vehicles in the month of April. Similarly, the impact of the second wave of Corona is visible on the sale of vehicles in the month of April-2021.

SIAM Director-General Rajesh Menon said, “As apprehension increases, cases of COVID-19 infection have affected vehicle sales in the month of April 2021. Passenger vehicle sales declined by around 10.07 percent compared to March 2021. Several states have imposed lockdowns and various restrictions at the local level, where there has been a sharp jump in the COVID-19 case, which has impacted sales.”

According to the latest figures released by the Society of Indian Automobiles Manufacturers, the number of two-wheelers shipped to dealers declined by 33 percent to 9,95,097 units. In March, 14,96,806 units were sold. Motorcycle sales were down by 33 percent. 6,67,841 units were sold in April, which was 9,93,996 units in the month of March.

Similarly, scooter sales declined by 34 percent to 3, 00,462 units as against 4, 57,677 units in March. Sales of three-wheelers also declined by 57 percent to 13,728 units during April from 31,930 units in March. Vehicle sales fell 30 percent in all segments and 12, 70,458 units were sold in April, compared to 18, 19,682 units in March.
