Pune, 12th July 2021: A multi-storey prison has been set up in Miami, USA for under trial prisoners. On the same lines, the proposal to set up a multi-storey jail in Mumbai has been submitted to the Maharashtra Home Department, said Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons Sunil Ramanand.

There is a scarcity of space in Mumbai and as the city expands and the population increases, so does the crime rate. Many prisons in the state have to hold more prisoners than their capacity. The current situation does not rule out the possibility of an increase in corona infection in prisons. With this in mind, a multi-storey prison like in Miami has been proposed in Mumbai.

In this regard, Inspector General of Prisons Ramanand said that a proposal has been submitted to the Home Department to set up a multi-storey prison in Mumbai like in Miami. In this way, a multi-storey jail can be set up in front of the Tata Institute at Chembur. This place can hold 5,000 undertrial prisoners. The ground floor will accommodate prisoner officers and staff. Arrangements will be made to keep prisoners upstairs.

Vaccination of 69% of prisoners in prisons

At present, there are 33,719 convicts and other prisoners in various jails in the state. Out of which 23,277 prisoners have been vaccinated so far. Up to 90% vaccination has been done in many prisons. Although the number of inmates is higher in some Central prisons, the number of vaccinations has increased.
