Kerala, 10th August 2022: Bindu, who lives in Kerala, started reading books to encourage her son to read when he was in 10th standard, but it inspired her to prepare for the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) exam.

Now, both mother and son are recruited for government jobs. Bindu, 42, said that she has passed the Last Grade Servant (LDS) exam and was placed at the 92nd rank, while her 24-year-old son has passed the Lower Division Clerk (LDC) exam and is on the 38th rank.

Bindu explained that she started reading to encourage her son to stud, but the habit inspired her too. She then enrolled in a coaching center. After her son’s graduation, he was admitted to the coaching institute as well.

Bindu said that she tried twice for LGS and once for LDC, but her fourth attempt was successful. She explained that her real goal was the ICDS Supervisor exam and that passing the LGS exam is a bonus. She has been an Anganwadi teacher for the last 10 years. Bindu said that in her repeated attempts to clear the PCS exam, her teachers at the coaching center, her friends, and her son encouraged and supported her. Her son claimed they both did not study together, but they used to discuss some subjects.

He said, “I prefer to study alone. In addition, mothers do not always study. She studies when she gets time and after her Anganwadi duties.”

The Anganwadi teacher said, “I am a good example of what a PSC exam aspirant should and should not be. I mean, I don’t study continuously. I start preparing for the exam six months before the date. Then, I take a break till the next round of the exam. The examinations are announced after three years. Perhaps, it is because of these breaks in preparation that I have never been able to clear the exam before now. I am also an example of this – if you keep trying even after repeated failures, then finally, one day, you will succeed.”
