Chandigarh, 19th September 2022: Protests at Chandigarh University subsided last night after students gained assurance from the University and police officials that all matters will be handled legally. According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the University will reportedly remain closed till 24th September. Deputy Commissioner of Mohali, Amit Talwar, stated that a magisterial probe will be introduced including a Special Investigation Team. Two men and the accused girl have been held.

Agitations began in the University on Sunday morning when it was alleged that objectionable videos of over 60 girls were leaked by a girl student in the hostel. Distressed students began a protest and demanded legal action. However, following the initial investigation, police officials and the University revealed that the student sent only her video to a man. Moreover, reports and rumours of students attempting suicide have also been dismissed. Reportedly, a few students had anxiety attacks and fainted during the protests. They received proper treatment and were released soon. According to India Today, The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University stated, “No student committed suicide. A preliminary probe reveals that the accused girl had sent her own pictures/videos to her boyfriend. No other material was found. FIR filed. Police are probing it. I appeal to students and parents not to believe any rumours.”

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has ordered a high-level enquiry and stated that the guilty will be punished. The ADGP Community Affairs Division has confirmed that a proper forensic probe of the mobile phone will be undertaken. In the meantime, authorities and the University have pleaded with students, parents, and citizens to refrain from believing and forwarding rumours or unconfirmed updates.
