New Delhi, 31st August 2021:The Pentagon announced on Monday that the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan after 20 years of US military operations has been completed . The US Defense Department Pentagon tweeted that the last US soldier to leave Afghanistan is Major General Chris Donahue, who boarded a C-17 aircraft on August 30, marking the end of the US mission in Kabul. Simultaneously, the commander of US Central Command, General Kenneth McKenzie, during a Pentagon news conference, announced the completion of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

General Kenneth McKenzie said “I am here to announce the completion of my withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of the military mission to evacuate American citizens”. McKenzie said the last US C-17 military plane took off at midnight from Hamid Karzai International Airport. He  also said that  the Taliban had been very helpful and useful in conducting evacuation and final flights despite the deep hostility between the two sides.

Due to  the September 11, 2001 attacks on America by Al Qaeda, American soldiers came to Afghanistan under the leadership of the NATO coalition to oust the Taliban from power in 2001. President Joe Biden earlier this year set  August 31as the  deadline for the withdrawal of US forces. At the same time, the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) carried out two attacks during the two-week evacuation operation. A suicide bombing killed more than 120 people, including 13 American soldiers. After this the last flight from Kabul airport has been completed amidst heavy security.
