To honour soldiers who have been disabled in the line of duty, while serving the Nation and to celebrate the undying spirit of ‘Soldiering’, Indian Army has declared 2018 as the ‘Year of Disabled Soldiers in Line of Duty’. As part of the initiative, a Sammaan Samaroh is being organised by Headquarters Southern Command at Pune on 13-14 December 2018 to felicitate the soldiers disabled in the line of duty and highlight their contribution to Indian Army and the Nation. General Bipin Rawat, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, ADC, Chief of Army Staff will be the chief guest for the event on 13 December 2018. The event will be attended by a number of military and civil dignitaries, including Lieutenant General S K Saini, AVSM, YSM, VSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command. Approximately 600 serving and retired disabled soldiers from Indian Army’s Southern Command, South Western Command and Central Command will be attending the event. Wheel chairs, prosthetic and artificial limbs will be presented to the disabled soldiers during the event.

The event will commence at 11:00 AM on 13 December 2018 with a wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial of Bombay Engineering Group (BEG) & Centre, Kirkee, to commemorate the supreme sacrifice by the soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty. It will be followed by a ceremony for release of Directorate of Indian Army Veteran Magazine and felicitation of outstanding disabled soldiers for their achievements.

The primary focus of the event is towards ameliorating the life of the soldiers, who while selflessly serving the nation became disabled for life. It will witness participation by various welfare agencies like Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC), Queen Mary’s Technical Institute (QMTI), Artificial Limb Centre (ALC), Ex-Serviceman Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), Kendriya Sainik Board and PCDA (Allahabad), who will set up stalls to assist the disabled soldiers in resolving any pay/ pension anomalies and create awareness about medical, rehabilitation, beneficiary schemes and vocational opportunities. Various placement agencies will be attending the event and will do their bit in providing employment to the disabled soldiers. Medical team with specialist and super specialty services will also be made available to the disabled soldiers.

The event will be a platform for interaction with disabled soldiers and addressing their grievances. Indian Army is making efforts to motivate and assist the disabled soldiers to become self-reliant by picking up new skills, contribute to nation building and lead a life with pride and financial independence.

A cultural programme will be hosted at 07:00 PM on 13 December 2018 at Bombay Engineering Group (BEG) & Centre, Kirkee, wherein, a Dance Drama drafted by Redefined Concepts, Pune and enacted by disabled soldiers showcasing the life of disabled soldiers will be presented. The programme will be aimed at sensitizing the environment about the ordeals in the life of a disabled soldier.

The disabled soldiers will be taken on an organised tour of certain monumental places in Pune on 14 December 2018, which include the famous Aga Khan Palace, Shanivaar Wada and National Defence Academy.
